Twilight, Harry Potter and other "literature" I will never read.

Sometimes being the odd man out isn't such a bad thing. Over the years, we all have seen our fair share of trends. Whether it be in fashion, music or the ever-changing electronic world, people jump onto a bandwagon and are in disbelief when they meet or speak to someone that hasn't been in the loop. Taking it a step further, those type of people act as if they are looking at an enigma when you respond back that you think a certain trend is whack and you don't wanna bother indulging in it. The literary world is no different.

Lately, the crazes have been books and then the books that become movies. The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Twilight are ones that stick out in my mind. I haven't read a single page of any of their books nor watched a single frame of their accompanying movie adaptations outside of a movie trailer. (Dont "smh" and "WTF" all at once!)

The fact that the movies are sinfully long and have various chapters makes things even worse when it comes to my willingness to invest time. Just from my observations, Harry Potter is some wizard in training that for some reason doesn't fully grow up and move on with his life and when it comes to Twilight it's a story about a ware-wolf Abercrombie Model, a metrosexual vampire and a  plain jane looking girl unworthy of fighting over who can't make up her damn mind. Those stories in a nutshell from a guy that hasn't read a page. It just doesn't appeal to me and I think these youngsters that are all gaga over the series and are salivating over every sequel and new book are just playing into the palm of the propaganda. I'm just thinking that if it's attracting the mainstream young teens then the story doesn't really have much substance to it. I mean Steven King was throwing Twilight Author Stephenie Meyer under the bus that her writing is amateurish at best.
“Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”
Now I haven't read a whole lot of Stephen King but from what I have invested in, he's good in some doses so I would respect his opinion. That about sums it up. These trendy writers are just using the juicy attractive elements that the kids will eat right up, but when these guys grow up and look back, they'll realize how crappy of a series it was.

  2. The Harry Potter series was really good. I began reading them when I was a child and grew up with them. The movies may be about a wizard, but I liked the books because they were about not allowing the crappy hand you got dealt turn you into a bad person. You have a choice with what you do with your life. It is about friendship and doing the right thing no matter what. The wizarding world was just an extra fun part. To each his own though.

  3. Thanks for commenting, Susu. Well, I'll just say that if my future kids want to watch or read Harry Potter, then I'll give it a chance myself so I can discuss the series with them. But when it comes to watching and reading Twilight, they'll be grounded. :-p
